Things can really heat up in the summer, and we don’t just mean box-office movies. August is the hottest month in Austin on average and that’s true for much of Texas. When you’re planning your next driving vacation this summer, use these tips to keep the fun rolling.
Proper Tire Pressure
Make sure you have the correct tire pressure in your car tires. If you’re going on a long road trip for your summer vacation, you’ll probably have a heavier load than usual. Your tire pressure will increase under this extra load. Additionally, friction from your tires driving on the road on a long trip and the hot summer temperatures will both add to your tire pressure. Keeping proper tire pressure will help you avoid blow-outs and keep you safely on the road.
Maintaining Good Speed
As you’re driving down the highway and hauling all that extra weight for your summer holiday, bear in mind that you’re also putting a lot of stress on your engine. Pay attention to your engine temperature gauge to make sure your engine isn’t overheating. If you notice it rising, try decreasing your speed. Just because you can drive 70 MPH, doesn’t mean you need to. A lower speed can take some pressure off your engine and even save you gas.
Optimal Engine Oil
If you’re going to be driving your vehicle under extraordinary conditions like hauling a trailer across the country in the summer heat, you might consider switching to a thicker engine oil. Increased demand on your engine will cause it to heat up more than usual, thinning out the oil more than usual. The thicker oil will keep your engine well lubricated when it needs it most.
